Did you know that in the US today 49 million people face hunger—that is 1 out of every 6 Americans. Here are some other facts about hunger:
1. More than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger
2. For every 100 school lunch programs there are only 87 breakfast sites and just 36 summer food programs
3. The number of Americans going to food pantries and soup kitchens has risen by 46% since 2006
4. More than 20 million children in the US rely on school meal programs to keep from going hungry.
When we think of hunger we often think about countries far away, but the reality is that many people are struggling to get enough to eat right here in our country, our state and even our own community.
The La Porte County Association of REALTORS is sponsoring our 2nd Annual food drive during the month of May to help our own community. Summer is approaching and many children that rely on meals at school may go hungry during the summer months. We are asking each office to collect nonperishable items during themonth at your offices. At the end of May we will collect the donated items from your office to give to the local food pantries in our communities. Start collecting your items now to help us fill those pantries. Didyou know that when clients move, they tend to throw away a lot of stuff, unfortunately some of that stuff is food items that could be donated. Talk to your clients and offer to collect those non-perishable itemswhen they move. Help us feed our community!
Your board of directors will once again challenge each office to collect food items. The office that collects the most items will receive a free lunch during your office meeting, paid for, delivered and served by your board of directors!! One food item equals one unit. Let’s see which office can collect the most items. This challenge takes place during the month of May and items will be counted at the end of the month. We have two categories this year for our challenge: Offices with more than 5 agents, and offices with 5 or less agents. Last year’s food drive was a huge success and we filled a truck full of items that were donated to the Michigan City and La Porte pantries of the Salvation Army.
